Introduction to Kutani ware

Kutani-yaki, a brilliant gem of Japanese painted ceramics.

These are painted ceramic wares representing traditional Japanese craftsmanship, originating from the Minamikaga region in southern Ishikawa Prefecture.

It is hailed as the pinnacle of painted ceramics for its exquisite craftsmanship and brilliant colors.

With a history of over 360 years, Kutani ware has become one of the most representative porcelain crafts in Japan.

It is not only famous for its vibrant and eye-catching colors, but also for its innovative spirit that keeps pace with the times.

It is deeply loved by enthusiasts in Japan and around the world. The name Kutani-yaki comes from Kutani Village in Enuma District, Kaga Province (near present-day Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture).

Its origins can be traced back to the early Edo period, when porcelain production began in Kutani Village, deep in the Yamanaka Onsen area of Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture.

Kutani ware is characterized by its unique "Kutani Gosai" – five types of Japanese hard paints: green, yellow, red, purple, and indigo – used for "upside-down painting".

(That is, the technique of painting patterns on the glaze surface), presenting a visual effect of bright colors and rich layers.

This has become one of its most distinctive features. As times have evolved, Kutani ware has continuously innovated, blending traditional and modern design.

It not only retains the classic colorful style, but also actively connects with contemporary popular culture.
