Introduction to Kutani ware

Kutani-yaki, a brilliant gem of Japanese painted ceramics.

Kutani ware, a type of painted ceramic representing traditional Japanese craftsmanship, originates from the Minami-Kaga region in southern Ishikawa Prefecture. Renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship and vibrant colors, Kutani ware is considered the pinnacle of painted ceramics. With a history spanning over 360 years, it is one of Japan's most representative porcelain crafts, famous not only for its bright and eye-catching colors but also for its innovative spirit, making it beloved by enthusiasts throughout Japan and the world. The name Kutani ware comes from Kutani Village in Enuma District, Kaga Province (near present-day Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture).

Its origins can be traced back to the early Edo period, when porcelain production began in Kutani Village, deep in the Yamanaka Onsen area of Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture.

Kutani ware is characterized by its unique "Kutani Gosai" – five types of Japanese hard paints: green, yellow, red, purple, and indigo – used for "upside-down painting".
(That is, the technique of drawing patterns on the glaze surface) presents a visual effect with bright colors and rich layers, which has become one of its most distinctive features. With the evolution of the times, Kutani ware has continued to innovate, integrating traditional and modern designs. It not only retains the classic polychrome style, but also actively connects with contemporary popular culture.
