Product Description

Please refer to the following text for the meanings of different seasons and months in Japan.

January : Mutsuki (むつき)

January is a month when family and friends gather together to exchange greetings and goodwill, hence it is called "Harmony Month".

February: Kisaragi (きさらぎ)

February is a month when the cold still lingers and you need to add layers to keep warm, hence the name "kisaragi" (衣更着), which is the most common way of saying it.

March: Yayoi

The more authoritative explanation is that March's alternative name, "Yayoi," comes from the abbreviation of "Yayoi" (木草弥や生ひ月), which means "the month when plants grow."

April: Utsuki (うづき)

The origin of April is well-established; it is an abbreviation of "溲疏盛开之月" (Uno no Hanazuki). Another theory suggests that April was named "卯月" because the rabbit is the fourth animal in the Chinese sexagenary cycle and is called "卯".

May: Spring Moon (さつき)

May is the season for transplanting rice seedlings, hence the name "Sanahetsuki" (早苗月), where "satsuki" is an abbreviation. The term "Izumi-zuki" (泉月) is still frequently used today, for example, in the phrase "May is sunny" (五月晴れ).

June: Waterless Moon (みなづき)

As the text indicates, the rainy season ends in June, and the area becomes dry, hence the name "Mizuki" (Waterless Moon). Recently, the rainy season has been prolonged, with abnormal weather occurring frequently, and the humid climate persisting into July. However, in the past, the rainy season usually ended in June.

July: Moon Moon)

One relatively reliable explanation for why July is called "Literary Month" is that there was a custom of writing poems and airing books in the night breeze on Tanabata (the seventh day of the seventh lunar month), hence the name July. In the Heian period, letters held great significance, making July a special month as well.

August: Hazuki (はづき)

August is the month when leaves turn red and fall, also known as "Yorochi-zuki" or "Hazuki".

September: Long Moon (ながつき)

September is a season when the nights gradually get longer, hence it is called "long month". We also often say "long nights in autumn".

October: Kannazuki (かんなづき)

In October, all the gods from across the country gather at Izumo Taisha Shrine in Izumo to discuss their experiences of the year. As a result, no gods reside outside of Izumo, and October is called "Kami-no-zuki" (the month without gods), because the gods are not present during this month.

November: Frost Moon (しもつき)

As the text indicates, November is the month when frost begins, hence it is called "Frost Month".

December: Teacher leaves (しわす)

From December until the end of the year, the monks were constantly on the move, even those who were usually idle were busy running around, hence the saying "the monks were always on the move." This saying has become the accepted view.
